A couple of months after January 2, 2024, the construction of an electric cable across the sea will begin. The work on the electricity transmission project initiated on the instructions of Turkish President Erdogan has been successfully completed. This project will solve the problem of power outages in the TRNC. The feasibility study of the project, which Erdogan spoke about during his visit to the TRNC, has come to completion, and the construction phase will begin within a few months after that.
Professor Murat Fakhrioglu, who teaches at the Department of Electrics and Electronics of the Middle East Technical University, shared his involvement in a project to supply electricity from Turkey to Northern Cyprus via an underwater cable. He acts as the coordinator of the engineering program and is a member of the Joint Energy Working Group established by Turkey and the TRNC, and spoke about the work done and plans for the future.
Fakhrioglu noted that the research led to the choice of the NVDC-VSC model as the optimal option for connecting electricity supply between the two countries. After selecting the model, TTürkiye Elektrik Iletim AŞ and the TRNC Electric Power Department began detailed connection work. The project is technically ready and awaiting implementation. The team is currently considering three nearby routes with a total length of about 85 km. They are also developing various cable capacity scenarios to ensure efficient energy transfer between Turkey and the TRNC.
